Ma Pi Leng Pass: Vietnam's Most Spectacular Mountain Road
Stretching 20 km at 2,000 metres above sea level, Ma Pi Leng Pass is one of Vietnam's Four Great Mountain Passes. Here's everything you need to know before you ride it.
What Is Ma Pi Leng Pass?
Ma Pi Leng Pass is a 20-kilometre mountain road on National Highway 4C, connecting the towns of Dong Van and Meo Vac in Ha Giang Province. Reaching nearly 2,000 metres above sea level at its highest point, it is one of Vietnam's Four Great Mountain Passes — and widely considered the most dramatic of the four.
The Meaning Behind the Name
In the Hmong language, "Ma Pi Leng" means "the horse's nostril" — a vivid reference to the pass being so steep and treacherous that even horses would sweat and heave for breath while crossing it.
The Road of Happiness: A Story of Human Perseverance
Ma Pi Leng Pass is part of the Road of Happiness (Con duong Hanh Phuc) — a 185-kilometre route built between 1959 and 1965 by over 1,500 youth volunteers from 16 provinces across Vietnam, many of whom died during construction. The 20-kilometre Ma Pi Leng section alone took 11 months to complete, largely by hand using hammers and chisels on near-vertical cliff faces. In 2009, the pass was designated a National Historical and Cultural Monument.
The Tu San Canyon Viewpoint
Approximately halfway along the pass, a designated viewing platform overlooks Tu San Canyon — the deepest gorge in Southeast Asia. The turquoise Nho Que River winds 700 metres below, a stunning contrast to the grey limestone walls. This viewpoint appears on virtually every international travel magazine cover featuring northern Vietnam.
The Riding Experience
For motorbike riders, Ma Pi Leng delivers both challenge and exhilaration. Sharp 180-degree hairpin bends, steep descents, and a narrow road surface demand confident riding skills. But reaching the summit — and the panoramic view that awaits — creates a memory that outlasts the journey.
Best Photography Spots
- Tu San Canyon overlook: Best light from 7–9 AM or 3–5 PM for warm golden tones
- Summit sea of clouds: October–December mornings often produce a dramatic cloud inversion
- Hairpin bends from above (drone): The serpentine road curves through limestone karst — ideal for aerial photography
Essential Safety Tips
- Thoroughly check brakes before starting — the descent to Meo Vac is long and steep
- Do not ride in rain or heavy fog — the road becomes extremely slippery
- Park only in designated areas; never stop in the middle of the road
- Start before 8 AM for the best light and to avoid tour group traffic
- Carry sufficient fuel — petrol stations are scarce on this stretch
- If you are not confident on mountain roads, hire a local easy rider guide
Getting There

It is best experienced as part of the Ha Giang Loop itinerary on Day 2, riding from Yen Minh through Dong Van and continuing to Meo Vac.
